Why doesn’t the microphone on my wired headset work when it’s plugged in?

Your machine contains two different 3.5MM audio jacks - one is for audio output (headphone, speakers, etc.), and the other is for audio input (via an external microphone). Many modern headsets are bundled with an input/output splitter, but you can also buy one.
